You may have seen headlines about TSA PreCheck® being suspended as part of the partial U.S. government shutdown.
Take a deep breath. PreCheck isn’t shut down. While an initial statement suggested changes to Trusted Traveler programs, TSA has since clarified that screening operations continue as normal.
Amid funding uncertainty at the Department of Homeland Security, an initial announcement indicated that major Trusted Traveler programs—including TSA PreCheck® and Global Entry—could be paused.
That announcement spread quickly, prompting concerns about longer airport lines and disrupted travel plans.
Within hours, however, the Transportation Security Administration clarified that PreCheck lanes would remain open with no change for the traveling public.
Yes. TSA officers are considered essential federal employees, which means airport security operations continue even during a government shutdown.
PreCheck screening lanes remain operational nationwide. TSA has said it will monitor staffing levels and adjust operations if needed, but at this point, expedited screening is still available.
For travelers flying soon, your Known Traveler Number remains valid, and you should continue to receive PreCheck access as usual when it appears on your boarding pass.
Global Entry is a different story.
The program, which is administered by U.S. Customs and Border Protection, has been affected by the shutdown. New Global Entry interviews and certain processing functions may be paused until funding is restored.
That means travelers returning from international trips may face longer wait times at immigration if enrollment services are limited.
If you already have Global Entry approval, your membership remains valid. The main impact is on new applications and interview scheduling.
While TSA PreCheck® lanes are open, shutdowns can create operational strain, especially if staffing levels shift.
If you have an upcoming flight, it’s wise to:
There is no widespread closure of PreCheck lanes at this time, but flexibility is always your friend.

Despite early reports and online chatter, TSA PreCheck® has not been shut down.
Screening lanes remain open, and existing memberships continue to work as normal. However, related programs like Global Entry may see temporary disruptions tied to broader DHS funding issues.
For now, travelers can breathe a little easier — but staying informed is always a smart move during periods of federal uncertainty.
