What Is Marriott’s Moxy Brand? Here’s Why Travelers Either Love It or Don’t

Pam

If you’ve searched for Marriott hotels lately, chances are you’ve come across the Moxy brand. The bright colors, trendy lobbies, and playful vibe definitely stand out from your typical hotel experiences. But what exactly is a Moxy hotel, and is it a good fit for your next trip?

I’ve stayed at two Moxy properties over the years, and one thing is clear: these hotels are designed for travelers who care more about location, style, and fun vibes than luxury amenities or extra space. The first time, when I stayed in Milan near the Linate airport, I loved the brand. Recently, I was in Fayetteville, Arkansas, watching my grandson in a track meet, and we decided to stay at the Moxy Fayetteville, using Marriott free-night certificates for two nights. This time, I wasn’t sure.

What is Moxy?

Moxy is Marriott’s lifestyle hotel brand that targets younger travelers, couples, friend groups, and city explorers. Think smaller rooms, bold décor, social spaces, and a more affordable price point in expensive cities. Many Moxy hotels are located right in the middle of the action, making them a great home base for sightseeing.

One of the signature Moxy features is that the front desk is often combined with the hotel bar. In fact, many guests receive a free welcome drink at check-in. From the moment you walk in, the hotel feels more like a hangout space than a traditional hotel lobby. We actually couldn’t figure out where to check in at the hotel in Arkansas.

What I Like

Lower Points Pricing

Compared to luxury Marriott brands, Moxy hotels can sometimes be a more budget-friendly redemption. If your goal is to spend more time exploring the city and less time sitting in a hotel room, this can be a smart use of points. Unfortunately, we had a lot of time in our room, and the layout was just weird and dorm-like. We couldn’t get two rooms with a king bed, so we opted for two queens. Imagine our surprise when they were end-to-end!😂

Fun Atmosphere

These hotels tend to have lively common spaces with games, music, coworking tables, and trendy food and drink options. Some travelers absolutely love the energy and social feel. We saw people playing games at tables and playing cornhole in the grass, and the staff just seemed fun!

Good for Short Stays

If you’re only in town for a night or two, the smaller rooms may not matter much. We’ve found them especially useful for quick city stays where we’re mostly out exploring. Unfortunately, in Arkansas, we ran into a lot of rain and needed to spend some time indoors, so that didn’t work so well.

What I Don’t Love

Tiny Rooms

This is probably the biggest complaint. Many Moxy rooms are VERY small. Like I said, a dorm room. No closet, limited drawers, no place to set up luggage. But they do manage some really cool alternatives and desks. Families, especially, may find the setup challenging.

Less Traditional Comfort

You won’t usually find luxury touches like large bathrooms, room service, big closets, or plush seating areas. Some rooms even skip desks or dressers entirely. The bathrooms are crowded with two people, and there wasn’t even any lotion available in the bathroom on my most recent stay.

Can Feel Loud or Busy

Because Moxy hotels focus heavily on social spaces and nightlife energy, some properties can feel noisy, especially on weekends. If you are older or not a night owl, it may not be for you.

Bottom Line

At the end of the day, Moxy hotels can be a fantastic points-and-miles option when you know what you’re getting. They aren’t luxury hotels, but they can absolutely help stretch your Marriott Bonvoy points, and they have a cool vibe. I think I enjoyed it more with my sister than I did when traveling with my husband. Maybe it’s perfect for a one-night stay, but not a two-night or longer stay.

But, honestly? Sometimes all you really need is a clean place to sleep in a great location while you’re out making memories.

A few years ago we stayed at the Moxy in Tromso Norway for 5 nights – we had to get two rooms for the three of us. Because I wound up with a double ear infection my husband and daughter stayed in one room and I stayed in the other and for just me in the room it was great But my husband and daughter felt very cramped in their room. The breakfast was decent but repetitive. It was brand new and modern which we liked. Now we are about to stay at the Moxy in Banff but I have heard great things about this property.
