Avianca Offering up to 45% Off Award Flights
Through its “Flights With Miles” campaign, Avianca is offering up to 45% off award flights on select routes across its network. The promotion applies to flights booked with Lifemiles on Avianca-operated routes, including departures from several airports across the United States.
Travelers will need to act quickly. Bookings must be made by March 9, though the discounted awards apply to travel on select dates beyond the booking window. As with many airline promotions, blackout dates apply, and not every flight will show discounted pricing.
Discounted awards appear on routes connecting U.S. cities to destinations across Central and South America, including Avianca hubs such as Bogota, Medellin and San Salvador.
For example, discounted economy award pricing appears on routes such as:
- Los Angeles (LAX) — Panama City (PTY) from 12,320 Lifemiles one way
- San Francisco (SFO) — Quito (UIO) from 6,860 Lifemiles one way
- Washington (IAD) — Guatemala City (GUA) from 4,850 Lifemiles one way
- New York (JFK) — San Pedro Sula (SAP) from 8,390 Lifemiles one way
Business-class is also included. Here are a few examples:
- New York (JFK) — Rio de Janeiro (GIG) from 45,480 Lifemiles one way
- Los Angeles (LAX) — Bogota (BOG) from 20,770 Lifemiles one way
- Boston (BOS) — Managua (MGA) from 17,500 Lifemiles one way
Because Lifemiles uses dynamic pricing for Avianca-operated flights, the exact mileage cost will vary depending on route and demand. Still, the promotion could significantly reduce the number of miles needed for flights to Latin America.
Families May Find Good Award Availability
This example shows discounted LifeMiles award pricing from Los Angeles (LAX) to Panama City (PTY) with availability for five travelers on the same flight.
One detail that stands out with this promotion is larger blocks of award availability.
In several searches, it’s possible to find five or even six award seats on the same flight at the discounted rate. That kind of availability can be particularly useful for families trying to book a single itinerary together — something that isn’t always easy with many airline programs.
If you’re planning travel with a group, it may be worth experimenting with flexible dates or nearby airports to uncover additional availability.
Stack the Sale With a Transfer Bonus
This deal becomes even more interesting when paired with the current American Express Membership Rewards® transfer bonus to Avianca Lifemiles.
Transfer bonuses effectively reduce the number of credit card points needed to book an award. Right now, with the 15% Amex bonus, 1,000 Membership Rewards points become 1,150 Lifemiles when transferred.
When combined with discounted award pricing, the effective cost of a flight can drop even further. For example, a flight pricing at 7,000 LifeMiles would require roughly 6,100 Membership Rewards points with the transfer bonus.
Just keep in mind that transfers from American Express to LifeMiles are irreversible, so it’s best to confirm award availability before moving points.
