Chase Travel℠ Adds Hotel Price Match—With Notable Limitations

Toni Perkins-Southam

Chase has introduced a new hotel price-match guarantee through Chase Travel℠, a move that brings its portal more in line with (my personal favorite) Capital One’s long-standing price-match benefit. While this seemingly could make booking through the Chase portal more appealing, the details aren’t necessarily supporting this.

How the Price Match Works

With this new policy, eligible cardholders can request a price match if they find the same hotel for a lower price within 24 hours of booking through Chase Travel℠. And if it’s approved, Chase will refund the difference.

The benefit applies to prepaid hotel bookings, and the lower-priced stay must also be available publicly and match all booking details.

At first glance, that sounds like a huge improvement. But one of the biggest ongoing issues when booking through credit card travel portals has been the inconsistent pricing compared to booking directly or through other online travel agencies.

A price match should help close that gap, right? Not necessarily.

Here’s the Catch

To qualify, the lower price must be for the exact same booking: same hotel, room type, dates, cancellation policy and occupancy. Those details alone can make matches pretty difficult to find.

On top of that, many common discounted rates won’t qualify, like member-only pricing, AAA rates, package deals, or other promotions.

What Rates Don’t Qualify

That means if you find a cheaper rate after logging in your hotel loyalty account or through a targeted deal, it probably won’t be eligible for a match.

These exclusions are a key limitation, since some of the best hotel pricing is often tied to loyalty programs or special discounts that fall outside the standard public rates.

Who Can Use It

So far, this benefit is currently being rolled out in a limited, targeted beta (specifically to Sapphire Reserve for Business℠ and J.P. Morgan Reserve cardholders, and reports of some Chase Sapphire Reserve® cardholders). A broader expansion is expected, but nothing has been confirmed just yet.

Notably, it isn’t available on more popular and widely held cards like the Chase Sapphire Preferred® Card or Chase Freedom Flex℠ or Chase Freedom Unlimited® cards.

Bottom Line

Chase’s new hotel price match is a step toward making its travel portal more competitive. But strict matching requirements and the exclusion of many discounted rates mean, unfortunately, it won’t solve the biggest frustrations with portal pricing.

For travelers already booking through Chase Travel℠, this adds a layer of reassurance. For everyone else, it’s helpful but probably not enough to change how you book.
