All About Premium Credit Cards & Their Annual Travel Credits

Stephanie P.

Premium credit cards can be a bit of a hot-button topic. While we absolutely love them, we totally get why a high annual fee can feel like a major deal-breaker. The secret to making premium cards work for you is simple: you have to know how to squeeze every bit of value out of those premium perks.

Today, we’re diving into the travel credits offered by the heavy hitters: Chase, Capital One, and American Express. The trickiest part is usually figuring out which cards actually offer them and, more importantly, how to actually claim them.

Let’s Talk Cards

The cards that offer travel credits all live under the “premium” umbrella. These are the high performers that deliver results and offer significant benefits. We’re suckers for a good travel credit because, let’s be real, travel is just better when someone else is picking up the tab!

The cards that fall into this category include:

  • Chase Sapphire Reserve®
  • Sapphire Reserve for Business℠
  • Capital One Venture X Rewards Credit Card
  • Capital One Venture X Business
  • American Express Platinum Card®
  • The Business Platinum Card® from American Express

Breaking Down the OG $300 Annual Chase Travel℠ Credit

If you have been with us a while, you know we are all partial to Chase, and for good reason: they have one of the best rewards programs out there. The $300 annual Chase Travel℠ credit available with both the Chase Sapphire Reserve® and Sapphire Reserve for Business℠ is the gold standard of perks because it is so easy to take advantage of. While other cards make you jump through hoops, Chase keeps it simple.

Here is the breakdown on how to master this credit:

  • Zero Effort Required: You don’t need to activate a thing or hunt for a special “redeem” button. Chase will automatically identify your travel purchases and apply the credit until you reach your annual $300 limit. It’s essentially a $300 thank-you.
  • The Broad “Travel” Definition: Chase’s definition of travel is famously generous. Sure, it covers the big stuff like flights and hotels, but it also covers things you may use every day. Things like Uber or Lyft rides, trains, parking garages, and even rental car purchases. As soon as you make a purchase under the travel umbrella, Chase issues you a credit toward your $300 limit. If the charge is over $300, the credit still applies to cancel out $300 of your charge.
  • Fresh Credit Every Year: This is an annual credit, and one of the reasons many of us at Points Talk Squad will keep it in our wallets. On your account anniversary, a new $300 is ready for you to use.
  • Freedom to Book Anywhere: Unlike the other banks, Chase allows you to use this credit easily and without limit. You can trigger this credit by booking directly with an airline, on a discount site, or even through Uber rides. No need to book through Chase Travel℠.

In short, the Chase travel credit is extremely flexible, applied automatically, and isn the easiest way to make your premium card pay for itself. You can track your earning progress directly at Chase Travel℠.

Additional Travel Credits on the Sapphire Reserve® Cards

  • The $500 The Edit by Chase Travel℠: This is where things get fancy. When you book a stay of two or more nights using The Edit by Chase Travel℠, you will get up to $500 in statement credits annually. In 2025, cardholders were limited to using one $250 credit in the first half of the year and the remaining $250 credit in the second half. That is no longer the case. You can now use each $250 credit at any point in the year! (The credits do need to be used as two separate transactions, though.) Hotel bookings through The Edit also include additional perks, such as daily breakfast for two and a $100 property credit.
  • The 2026 $250 Select Hotel Credit: Chase added another incredible travel credit for 2026. There is now a one-time $250 credit for prepaid stays of two or more nights at select hotels, including IHG, OMNI, Virgin, Pan Pacific, Minor, Pendry, and Montage properties.
  • Pro Tip: You can actually stack these credits together! All you need to do is find a hotel that is bookable through The Edit and is also eligible for the Select Hotel Credit. I plan to use my credits to book a room at the Kimpton Tryon Park in Charlotte, NC. Booking the Kimpton Tryon Park through The Edit will trigger both credits in a single trip. If I haven’t used my $300 annual travel credit by then, it will also be triggered, meaning I could save $800 on a single booking ($250 The Edit credit + $250 IHG hotels credit + $300 travel credit).

Chase is leading the pack with their powerhouse travel credits available for 2026. Whether you want to use these benefits all separately or attempt a hat trick by claiming three benefits with one booking, the $1,050 available in travel credits makes these two Reserve cards very compelling.

Explaining the $300 Annual Credit on the Capital One Venture X Cards

The Capital One Venture X Rewards Credit Card is another card that has a permanent home in our wallets here at PTS. We love it because it is a premium card with one of the lowest annual fees among the premium cards, at annual_fees. The annual travel credit on both the Capital One Venture X Rewards Credit Card and the newer Capital One Venture X Business is $300, effectively offsetting the annual fee with a single benefit.

  • Booking Through the Portal:  Unlike with Chase’s travel credit, to take advantage of the $300 Capital One travel credit, you must book through the Capital One Travel Portal. The $300 credit is applied as a discount at checkout for any travel you book, including flights, hotel stays, or car rentals. You can also pay for a booking with Capital One miles in conjunction with the travel credit. For example, you book a night at the Umstead Hotel in Raleigh, NC, and the room rate is $656 per night. The $300 annual fee is deducted from the rate, leaving you with a bill of either $356 or 35,600 points. Depending on your booking goal, you can either receive an incredible free stay or a five-star, five-diamond room at a fantastic out-of-pocket cost. (Sounds like I have booked this exact stay before, doesn’t it? Spoiler: it’s where my family spent the New Year’s Eve holiday. I highly recommend it.)
  • Points Multiplier: You will also receive ten points per dollar spent on hotel bookings through the Capital One Portal when you pay with your Venture X card. If you are lucky, there may be an additional points bonus. When we made our first booking on our new Venture X card, we received an additional 25,000 points!
  • Wipe Out the Annual Fee: This premium card is a no-brainer because you can nearly wipe out your annual fee with just one travel booking. The premium benefits make this card a very valuable tool in your wallet.
  • Annually Refreshed: The travel credit is a recurring benefit available on both the personal and business versions of the Venture X cards. Every year on your account anniversary, your $300 will refresh.

Capital One’s booking rules are definitely less flexible than Chase’s. But Capital One has the lowest annual fee. If premium cards intimidate you, the Capital One Venture X Rewards Credit Card is a great gateway card. Trust us, once you get one premium card, you will find plenty of excuses to open one from each major bank!

How to Use Your Annual Travel Credits from American Express

The travel credits available with the American Express Platinum Card® and The Business Platinum Card® from American Express can be lucrative when you’re able to make use of them. Just be sure to activate any relevant credits before you plan to book anything so you don’t miss out on the credits being applied.

$600 Hotel Credit (both cards)

  • Semi-Annual Split: This hotel credit is now $600 per year, split into two $300 credits, on both the American Express Platinum Card® and the Business Platinum Card® from American Express. The first credit is redeemable from January to June, and the second is redeemable from July to December.
  • Booking Requirements:  To trigger the credit, you must book a prepaid stay through American Express Travel®.
  • Eligible Properties: It applies only to bookings under either Fine Hotels + Resorts® or the Hotel Collection. You can trigger the full $300 with a one-night stay with Fine Hotels + Resorts®. The Hotel Collection requires a minimum two-night stay. These bookings both usually offer lots of perks such as free breakfast for two, early check-in, late check-out, and a $100 property credit.

$200 Airline Fee Credit (both cards)

  • Select Your Airline: Before using this, you must enroll and select your qualifying airline (Delta, American, United, or Southwest). Your selection will remain in effect for a full calendar year. You must re-enroll in benefits by selecting your airline each year. You may also change your airline each year, but once you have made your selection, no further changes are allowed that year. I suggest you wait to choose your airline until you know which one you will be flying most often.
  • Incidental Charges Only: This credit is specifically for incidental fees, such as checked bags, in-flight refreshments, WiFi, seat selection fees, baggage fees, or a lounge day pass.
  • Exclusions: This credit does not cover airline tickets, upgrades, gift cards, or mileage purchases.

$200 Hilton Credit

  • Direct Hilton Purchases: The Business Platinum Card® from American Express provides an additional $200 credit for purchases made directly through the Hilton website or at a Hilton property. This benefit is divided into quarterly credits of $50 each.

Don’t get us wrong, we love American Express, but their travel credits require the most thought to ensure the cardholders are credited their well-earned rewards. Please ensure that if you have an American Express Platinum Card® or Business Platinum Card® from American Express, you enroll in your benefits before using them. The chat feature in your American Express account is very helpful if you get lost or can’t remember all the steps needed to trigger your benefits. It is also important to remember that these are valid travel credits and won’t appear on your statement until American Express credits them. This usually only takes a few days, but it can take up to eight weeks to appear.

Bottom Line

So what’s the moral of this very premium story? Annual fees aren’t the villain. Unused annual credits are. These cards just require a little more strategy, but your effort will be worth it when you enjoy nearly free travel! Please don’t fear the fee; fear forgetting about your credits.

Go forth, redeem aggressively, stack credits shamelessly, and remember, if your premium card isn’t paying you to travel, it’s time you have a serious talk with your wallet.
