Big Changes Coming to the Chase Sapphire Preferred® Card

Pam

The card_name has long been one of our favorite travel rewards cards for beginners and seasoned points enthusiasts alike. With valuable transfer partners, strong travel protections, and a reasonable annual fee, it has earned a permanent place in many wallets.

Now, it appears that changes may be on the horizon. Yes. Again.

Here’s what we know:

The Good

The annual fee is not changing.😅

New earn categories:

  • 3x on gas and EV charging
  • 3x on vacation homes like Airbnb and VRBO

Other earning categories (e.g., travel, dining, online grocery, select streaming services) remain the same.

The $50 travel perk is being doubled to $100, which helps it pretty much erase the annual fee and is way easier to use. It won’t be broken into chunks, and you’ll still have to book through Chase Travel℠. It will renew on the cardmember’s anniversary.

They are adding a credit for up to $120 for TSA PreCheck®/Global Entry/NEXUS every four years, emergency evacuation and transportation coverage, and a one-year complimentary Apple TV subscription upon activation of this benefit.

The Bad

Okay, you knew this was coming. While there are some good additions, this is where it hurts. Starting on October 1, 2026, Hyatt transfers from this card will no longer be 1:1 but will go to a 4:3 transfer rate. That means if you transfer 100,000 Chase Ultimate Rewards® points from this card, you will only receive 75,000 Hyatt points. This transfer rate will also affect the Ink Business Preferred® Credit Card. But thankfully point transfers to Hyatt from the Chase Sapphire Reserve® and Sapphire Reserve for Business℠ will remain at the 1:1 transfer rate, which makes these two cards even more valuable, in my opinion.

Additionally, Chase is discontinuing the 10% anniversary points bonus after October 1, 2026 also. This one doesn’t hurt as much.

Bottom Line

I think this news makes the Chase Sapphire Reserve® and the Sapphire Reserve for Business℠ even more valuable as keeper cards, as I find the 1:1 transfer vital. The new additions to the Chase Sapphire Preferred® Card are good, though, so we may become a family where one of us keeps that card, and the other person has a Reserve card. And with the elevated offer on the card_name ending on June 15th, you might want to consider applying for it now.
