The Complete Guide to Avios: One Airline Currency to Rule Them All (or at Least a Few)

Toni Perkins-Southam

One currency to connect them all, one currency to bind them—and through a network of airline programs, make award travel far more flexible than most frequent flyer miles….

In the world of airline rewards, that currency is Avios.

Originally created by British Airways, Avios now powers the loyalty programs of several airlines, including British Airways, Iberia, Aer Lingus, Qatar Airways, and Finnair. Because these programs share the same currency, travelers can earn Avios through one airline and redeem them through another.

The ability to move Avios between programs makes the system especially powerful. With the right strategy, it can unlock everything from short domestic flights to long-haul international awards.

Here’s everything you need to know about how Avios works and how to make the most of it.

What Is Avios?

Avios is a shared airline loyalty currency used by several airline programs, each with its own rules, redemption pricing, and elite status benefits.

Today, Avios powers the loyalty programs of several airlines:

  • Aer Lingus AerClub
  • Club Iberia Plus
  • Finnair Plus
  • Loganair Loyalty
  • Qatar Airways Privilege Club
  • The British Airways Club
  • Vueling Club

This shared currency creates a unique advantage: in many cases, you can move Avios between these programs to take advantage of different award pricing or availability. Think of Avios as a single currency that can travel between multiple airline ecosystems. A bit like one ring connecting several kingdoms across Middle-earth.

Why Avios Is Such a Valuable Points Currency

Avios is popular among frequent travelers for several reasons. First, many Avios programs price award flights based on distance rather than region. This can make shorter flights booked with Avios significantly cheaper in terms of points than flights booked with other airline programs.

Second, Avios points are relatively easy to earn. Between flights, credit cards, and transfer partners, there are many ways to build a balance.

Finally, the ability to move Avios points between airline programs adds a layer of flexibility that most airline currencies don’t offer. If one airline charges more points for a flight, another Avios program might offer the same route for fewer points.

How To Earn Avios

There are roughly a million ways to earn Avios. (Ok, not a million, but it feels like it!)

Flying With Avios Airlines

The most traditional way to earn Avios is by flying with airlines that use the currency.

Flights operated by British Airways, Iberia, Aer Lingus, Qatar Airways, and Finnair can all earn Avios when credited to one of their loyalty programs. You can also earn Avios when flying with many partner airlines, particularly those within the Oneworld alliance.

The number of Avios you earn depends on factors such as distance flown, ticket price, and fare class.

Credit Card Rewards

For many travelers, credit cards provide the fastest way to earn Avios.

Several airline co-branded credit cards enable you to earn Avios directly through everyday spending. These cards often come with welcome offers that can significantly boost your balance.

Transferable Credit Card Points That Convert to Avios

In addition to co-branded airline cards, Avios is also a transfer partner of several major flexible rewards programs. This makes it relatively easy to build an Avios balance even if you don’t hold a specific airline credit card.

Here are some of the major transferable currencies that can convert to Avios:

Shopping and Travel Partners

Many Avios programs also allow members to earn points through partner activity.

Examples include:

Moving Avios Between Programs

One of the most powerful features of Avios is the ability to move points between participating programs.

In many cases, Avios can be transferred between accounts at a 1:1 ratio, allowing you to shift points depending on where you plan to redeem them. For example, a traveler might earn Avios through British Airways but later move them to Iberia or Qatar Airways if those programs offer a better redemption price for a particular flight.

Once your loyalty accounts are linked, Avios can be transferred between programs immediately using the “Combine My Avios” feature.

How To Use Avios

Avios points can be redeemed for several types of travel rewards, but flights usually provide the best value.

Award Flights

The most common redemption option is booking flights using Avios.

You can redeem Avios for flights operated by the airline whose program you’re using, as well as flights operated by partner airlines. And because many Avios programs use distance-based pricing, shorter flights can offer excellent value.

For example, short routes within Europe or domestic U.S. flights operated by partner airlines may cost relatively few Avios compared to traditional airline award pricing.

However, longer flights may require more points and may incur higher taxes and fees, depending on the airline.

Flight Upgrades

Some Avios programs allow you to use points to upgrade paid flights.

Upgrade availability depends on fare class and seat availability, so this option may not always be available. Still, it can sometimes provide good value, especially on long-haul flights.

Other Redemption Options

Avios can also be redeemed for options such as hotel stays, car rentals, and travel experiences.

However, these options typically provide less value per point than flights. As a result, most experienced travelers prefer to save their Avios for airfare.

Avios Sweet Spots

While redemption value varies by route and airline, a few award types often stand out as strong uses of Avios.

The British Airways Club for Short Domestic Flights

Because British Airways uses distance-based pricing, shorter flights can still offer solid value.

For example, this flight from Dallas to Oklahoma City costs 13,500 British Airways Avios or about $436. Redeeming Avios for this ticket would give you roughly 3.2 cents per point in value, which is well above the typical value many travelers assign to the currency.

While pricing has increased in recent years, Avios can still be useful for short flights when cash fares are high. These types of awards can be especially useful for positioning flights or last-minute travel.

Club Iberia Plus for Flights to Europe From the U.S.

Iberia Plus is often considered one of the best Avios programs for transatlantic travel to Europe.

Off-peak business-class flights between cities such as New York or Boston and Madrid can require significantly fewer Avios than many competing programs. These flights start around 40,500 Avios. When award space is available, these redemptions can provide excellent value for travelers looking to fly to Europe in a premium cabin.

Qatar Airways Privilege Club for Long-Haul Premium Cabin Flights

Qatar Airways Privilege Club can be a great way to redeem Avios for long-haul premium cabin flights, particularly on Qatar Airways itself.

The airline’s well-known Qsuite business class is often considered one of the best business-class products in the world. Using Avios through Qatar Airways Privilege Club can provide access to these premium seats on routes between the U.S., Doha, and beyond.

Things To Watch Out For

While Avios offers a great deal of flexibility, there are a few potential downsides.

Some airlines impose higher taxes and carrier-imposed surcharges on certain award flights, particularly long-haul routes. In addition, different Avios programs may price the same flight differently. A redemption that looks expensive through one airline might be much cheaper through another.

Because of this, it’s worth checking multiple Avios programs before booking an award ticket.

Bottom Line

Avios has grown from a single airline currency into a shared rewards system spanning multiple international airlines.

With the ability to earn points through flights, credit cards, and transfer partners—and the flexibility to move Avios between programs—travelers have more redemption opportunities than ever.

Once you understand how the programs connect, Avios can become one of the most versatile currencies in the points-and-miles world. And unlike some things that claim to rule them all, this one actually helps travelers—rather than trying to corrupt them.
