All About IHG Card Eligibility

Pam

IHG credit cards can be a solid play for hotel points, especially if you stay at brands like Holiday Inn, Kimpton, InterContinental, or Hotel Indigo. As you know, I love a Kimpton, but also enjoy the Indigo brand. And if you travel with a family, a Holiday Inn can just make sense. But it’s important to understand two things: who’s eligible and how the different IHG cards actually compare.

Let’s break it all down.

Who Can Apply for IHG Credit Cards?

IHG credit cards are issued by Chase, so their standard approval rules apply.

In general, you’ll need:

  • To be at least 18 years old
  • A U.S. mailing address plus a Social Security number or ITIN
  • Good to excellent credit, usually around the 700+ range
  • Enough income to manage payments responsibly

Approval isn’t automatic even with good credit. Chase also looks at things like recent applications, existing balances, and how many cards you’ve opened lately.

The IHG Bonus Rule Most People Miss

This is where many applicants get tripped up.

For personal IHG credit cards, you’re typically not eligible for a new welcome bonus if:

  • You currently hold a personal IHG card, or
  • You received a welcome bonus on a personal IHG card in the last 24 months (business cards don’t count).

That means you usually can’t earn bonuses on two personal IHG cards at the same time. Timing matters, especially when welcome offers can be worth multiple free nights. The business IHG card follows separate rules, which can open up more options if you qualify. You CAN hold both an IHG personal card and a IHG business card at the same time.

IHG One Rewards Traveler Credit Card

This is the no-annual-fee entry option.

Best for:

  • Occasional IHG guests
  • Beginners who want hotel points without committing to a fee

Key features:

  • Bonus points on IHG stays and select everyday spending
  • Automatic Silver Elite status
  • No annual free night

This card is simple and low risk, but it’s not where the biggest value usually lives long term.

IHG One Rewards Premier Credit Card

This is the most popular personal IHG card, and for good reason.

Best for:

  • Frequent or semi-frequent IHG travelers
  • Anyone who can use a free night every year

Key features:

  • Annual free-night certificate
  • Automatic Platinum Elite status
  • Strong bonus categories on IHG stays, gas, dining, and travel
  • Fourth night free on award stays

If you stay at IHG properties even a couple of times a year, this card often pays for itself just from the free night. I am using my stay at a Kimpton in Sacramento for a wedding. (I did have to top it off with some extra points, though.)

IHG One Rewards Premier Business Credit Card

This card is for business owners, freelancers, or side-hustlers.

Best for:

  • Small business owners who stay at IHG hotels
  • People who want IHG perks without affecting personal bonus timing

Key features:

  • Annual free-night certificate
  • Automatic Platinum Elite status
  • Higher earning rates on IHG stays and business spending
  • Separate eligibility rules from personal IHG cards

Many people overlook this card, but it is a strong card if you’re locked out of a welcome offer on a personal card.

Bottom Line

The real value in IHG cards usually comes from free-night certificates, elite status, and award-stay perks, not just everyday point earning. Before applying, take a minute to check:

  • When you last earned an IHG welcome bonus
  • Whether you currently hold a personal IHG card
  • How many Chase cards have you opened recently
  • Whether a business card might be the better route

IHG cards are a staple for each of us. Whether you want a fancy stay like the Seafire Kimpton or a family stay for a soccer tournament, they can work for you, too.
