Great Ways to Use Your American Express Membership Rewards® to Travel

Stephanie P.

We love that you can earn huge welcome offers with American Express®. These high-value points allow you to book luxury hotel stays and dreamy business-class flights. The points-earning opportunities are plentiful, and the booking options are even greater. While we love American Express Membership Rewards® and all the wonderful ways to use them, there are some very important rules you need to know when applying for any American Express credit card.

American Express has some strict rules for its cards. First, Amex has an automated approval system, which means you can be approved for only one American Express credit card every five days. You need to give it at least six days between applications to avoid the “automatic no.” Next, there is the “two cards in 90 days” rule. You will be automatically declined if you apply for a third card within 90 days. Lastly, you cannot hold more than five American Express cards at once.

American Express also has a “family rule” that means you may not be eligible to have a lower-fee personal card if you’e already had the higher-fee personal card in that same family. To maximize your point-earning potential, if you’re interested in holding multiple personal Amex cards, you will want to follow the enrollment order below:

  1. American Express® Green Card
  2. American Express® Gold Card
  3. American Express Platinum Card®

After you follow the rules and earn all the points, you will be able to use those rewards for incredible stays and flights all over the world. My personal favorite way to use my American Express points is with Marriott or Hilton. While both hotel companies use dynamic pricing and their reward rooms are pricey, American Express offers transfer bonuses a couple of times a year to both Marriott and Hilton, making their points even more valuable.

Marriott Reward Stays

The Westin Bora Bora
Room rates range from 80,000 (off-peak) points per night to 112,000 (peak) points per night

The Westin Bora Bora is a newly renovated property boasting the largest number of over-water bungalows in Bora Bora. This resort offers an idyllic overwater bungalow experience with panoramic views of the dazzling turquoise lagoon and the iconic Mount Otemanu. I have been eyeing this property since the renovations were announced as complete back in 2024.

Using a 30% transfer bonus, I used 442,000 American Express Membership Rewards® points and 75,000 Marriott Bonvoy® points to book a seven-night stay in an overwater bungalow in Bora Bora. As a Marriott Bonvoy member, I also got my fifth night free. I hold the Marriott Bonvoy Brilliant® American Express® Card, which gives me Marriott Bonvoy® Platinum Elite Status. At this status level, I get free breakfast for two and, if available, room upgrades. Fingers crossed that I will get an upgrade upon arrival in September!

Terms apply. Enrollment is required for select benefits. Redeem four nights, get the fifth night free when you redeem points for a consecutive five-night Marriott hotel. You can receive a fifth Reward Night free, redeemable at that same hotel during that same stay.

Ritz Carlton Reserve, Dorado Beach
Room rates range from 180,000 (off-peak) points per night to 254,000 (peak) points per night

I love a bougie escape I can book on points, and I have been dreaming of this retreat in Puerto Rico for a couple of years now. This secluded Ritz-Carlton Reserve property offers a serene escape with stunning beachfront villas, private plunge pools, and unparalleled service. Taking advantage of a 20% transfer bonus, I used 349,000 American Express Membership Rewards® points to book a five-day stay in December at this tropical dream. I got my fifth night free as a Marriott Bonvoy® member and will be using my Platinum status for free breakfast for two while staying on property.

Redeem four nights, get the fifth night free when you redeem points for a consecutive five-night Marriott hotel. You can receive a fifth Reward Night free, redeemable at that same hotel during that same stay.

JW Marriott Kaafu Atoll Island Resort
Room rates range from 89,500 (off-peak) points per night to 145,000 (peak) points per night

The JW Marriott Maldives is a relatively new addition to the chain’s luxury portfolio. The over-water bungalows here are lavish and spacious, with private pools and stunning views. Considering the location of this beautiful property and that it is still one of the newer hotels in the Maldives, the point prices remain relatively competitive, and award availability is still easy to snag.

We recommend booking six months to a year out to guarantee availability. Currently, you can book an over-water bungalow for five nights in August of 2026 for 494,000 points or January of 2027 for 616,000 points. These prices won’t stay this low. If you are sitting on a stack of American Express Membership Rewards® and the Maldives is on your bucket list, this hotel is the perfect booking.

Why We Love Transferring Our American Express Membership Rewards® to Hilton

American Express Membership Rewards® transfers to Hilton in a 1:2 ratio, so one Membership Rewards® point is worth two Hilton points. This alone makes booking Hilton Hotels more affordable with their dynamic point pricing. If you are also able to take advantage of a transfer bonus, your luxury travel dreams become even more attainable. Plus, you can book our favorite boutique hotel brand, Small Luxury Hotels, using your Hilton points.

Hilton Reward Stays We Love

Grand Hotel Victoria Concept and Spa (Small Luxury Hotel)
Room rates range from 89,500 (off-peak) points per night to 145,000 (peak) points per night

Lake Como has long been a favorite destination of both Jess and Pam here at Points Talk Squad. The Grand Hotel Victoria makes you feel like you have stepped into a Hollywood movie. The nineteenth-century villa has been transformed into a stylish modern retreat overlooking the stunning lake and picturesque mountains. Staying here really makes you feel just like Pam always says: like you are living the “lifestyle of the rich and the famous.” The service and Italian hospitality are unmatched, making this destination a truly special experience. Put your hard-earned points to work and go book yourself a northern Italian getaway.

Grand Wailea Maui
Room rates range from 110,000 for the standard room

The Grand Wailea is one of Maui’s most iconic luxury resorts. From sprawling tropical gardens to pristine beaches, this hotel is truly spectacular. This is the next hotel on my bucket list. I am hoping to take my family to Maui in a couple of years, and scoring a room at the Grand Wailea will feel like we won the lottery. While booking here requires a higher points redemption, it is one of the best ways to extract maximum value from your Membership Rewards® points, especially if you can wait for a transfer bonus. Booking five days to a week here will cost you, but it will be worth it. You can easily find award availability here for any time of year.

Airline Transfer Partners

Air France/KLM Flying Blue

We love Air France/KLM Flying Blue because they have great award rates for flights to Europe, especially when there’s a transfer bonus. Flying to Europe is so simple when you transfer your Amex points.

  • Real-World Availability (via seats.aero):  Book economy from the US to Europe for as few as 24,500 points in economy or in business class for 43,000 points.
  • Example: Fly direct from New York (JFK) to Madrid (MAD) for 24,500 points. Fly from Seattle (SEA) to Paris (CDG)  in business class for 60,000 points.

Virgin Atlantic: The Trick to Booking Delta for Less

Virgin Atlantic is often hailed for its amazing economy award availability. We love to transfer our Membership Rewards® points to Virgin Atlantic and use them to book the coveted Delta One cabin for considerably less. Airline alliances are the real cheat code, here.

  • Real-World Availability (via seats.aero): Using the Delta One Tool on seats.aero you can easily search for Delta One flights from anywhere to anywhere. Using Virgin Atlantic Miles, you can book Delta One for 47,500 points one way. Use even fewer points if there is a transfer bonus.
  • Example: Fly from several US cities to Europe for only 47,500 points. My favorite option is flying from Atlanta (ATL)  to Paris (CDG) in May. Paris in May is so dreamy!

Delta: Reliable Comfort

Delta is one of those airlines that just has the reputation of taking care of its passengers. You can sometimes find incredible deals for domestic flights.

  • Real-World Availability (via seats.aero): Easily find award availability between 7,000 points and 20,000 points for domestic flights in the US. Delta can even offer great business-class availability.
  • Example: Fly New York (JFK) to Chicago (ORD )in business  for 16,100 points or Houston (IAH) to Los Angeles (LAX) for 8,900 or Orlando (MCO) to Las Vegas (LAS) for 14,600

Qatar: QSuite or Bust

Our very own Jess just flew her family of five in Qsuites round-trip from the US to Tanzania. Using your points to book this bougie seat may be our favorite use of American Express Membership Rewards®. While these flights are legendary, they can be a challenge to book. Qatar typically releases two seats 361 days out at 3:00 am Doha time.

  • Real-World Availability (via seats.aero): seats.aero is the ultimate tool for snagging these seats. We love the “Qsuite Finder” tool for quick and easy searching.
  • Example: Fly from the United States to Doha for 70,000 points each way.

Bottom Line

American Express Membership Rewards® are among our favorite currencies for their incredible versatility and the high-value experiences they unlock. Whether you are looking for a generous welcome offer or plentiful earning opportunities through daily spending, these points serve as a getaway for both luxury hotel stays and dreamy business class flights. We love American Express Membership Rewards® because they turn bucket list dreams into reality.
