All About Iberia Avios: A Beginner’s Guide to Iberia Plus

Toni Perkins-Southam

Several airline loyalty programs use Avios as their rewards currency, but not all Avios programs work the same way.

One of the most useful of these programs is Iberia Club, the loyalty program of Spain’s flag carrier, Iberia. The program—formerly known as Iberia Plus—was recently rebranded as Iberia Club as part of a broader refresh of Iberia’s loyalty program.

While Iberia Club still uses Avios as its rewards currency, the program has undergone several changes in recent years, including adjustments to award pricing and elite-status requirements. Even so, Iberia Avios can still provide excellent value, particularly for flights between the United States and Spain.

Understanding how Iberia Club works—and when it makes sense to transfer Avios into the program—can help you unlock some valuable award opportunities.

Here’s what you need to know about how Iberia Avios works and how to make the most of them.

What Is Iberia Club?

Iberia Club is the frequent flyer program of Iberia and part of the Oneworld alliance, which includes airlines such as American Airlines, British Airways, Qatar Airways, and Japan Airlines.

Like several other airline loyalty programs, Iberia Club uses Avios as its rewards currency. This means Iberia Avios can often be transferred between other Avios programs, including:

  • Aer Lingus AerClub
  • Finnair Plus
  • Loganair Loyalty
  • Qatar Airways Privilege Club
  • The British Airways Club
  • Vueling Club

Although these programs all use Avios, they each have their own rules, redemption pricing, and award charts.

Because of these differences, the same flight may cost a different number of Avios depending on which program you use to book it. That’s one reason Iberia Club can sometimes offer better value for certain redemptions.

How Iberia Avios Works

Iberia Club uses a distance-based award chart for many flights. This means the number of Avios required for an award ticket generally depends on how far you’re flying. In most cases, shorter flights require fewer Avios, while longer flights cost more.

Like many airline loyalty programs, Iberia Club also uses peak and off-peak pricing. Iberia publishes a calendar showing which dates qualify as peak or off-peak for award travel. Flights on off-peak dates usually require fewer Avios, while flights during busier travel periods — such as holidays or summer travel — require more.

Because of this structure, Iberia Avios can offer particularly awesome value on certain routes, especially flights between North America and Spain.

How To Earn Iberia Avios

There are several ways travelers can earn Iberia Avios.

Flying With Iberia and Oneworld Airlines

The most straightforward way to earn Iberia Avios is by flying with Iberia or one of its partner airlines.

When you take a flight and add your Iberia Club number to the reservation, you can earn Avios based on factors such as the price of your ticket, the distance flown, and the type of fare you purchased. In general, more expensive fares and longer flights will earn more Avios than cheaper tickets.

Because Iberia is part of the Oneworld alliance, you can also earn Avios when flying with many partner airlines.

Credit Card Rewards

Credit cards are often the fastest way to build an Avios balance.

In the U.S., several co-branded airline cards earn Avios directly through everyday spending. Plus, these cards come with welcome offers that can provide a significant number of Avios after meeting minimum spending requirements. They include:

  • British Airways Visa Signature® Card
  • Iberia Visa Signature® Card
  • Aer Lingus Visa Signature® Card.

Transferable Credit Card Points

One of the easiest ways to earn Iberia Avios is by transferring points from flexible credit card programs.

Several major rewards programs allow transfers to Avios, including:

These programs typically transfer to Avios at a 1:1 ratio, although occasional transfer bonuses may provide even more value.

Moving Avios to Iberia Club

One of the most useful features of Avios is the ability to move points between participating airline programs. This flexibility allows you to move Avios into whichever program offers the best pricing for an award ticket.

Using the Combine My Avios feature, you can transfer Avios between the British Airways Club, Iberia Club, Aer Lingus AerClub and Qatar Privilege Club.

Once accounts are successfully linked, transfers between programs typically happen instantly.

Using Iberia Avios for Family Travel

If you’re traveling with a child under two years old, Iberia allows infants to fly on an adult’s lap when booking an award flight.

In many cases, the infant fare costs around 10% of the equivalent cash fare for the cabin you’re flying in, plus any taxes and fees. This pricing model is different from some other Avios programs, which base infant pricing on the number of Avios used for the ticket.

Because of this, the cost of adding a lap infant to an Iberia award ticket can get quite pricey depending on the route and the cash cost of the flight.

If you prefer your child to have their own seat, you can also book a separate award ticket using Avios. In this case, you’ll pay the full award-ticket price.

How To Use Iberia Avios

Iberia Avios can be redeemed for several types of travel rewards, but flights generally provide the best value.

Award Flights

The most common way to redeem Iberia Avios is for award flights.

You can use Avios to book flights operated by Iberia as well as flights on partner airlines. Having a long list of partners like Iberia does gives you a lot of flexibility when planning trips both within Europe and beyond.

Availability and pricing will vary depending on the route and travel dates, but award flights almost always provide the best value when redeeming your Iberia Avios.

Flight Upgrades

In some cases, you can also use Iberia Avios to upgrade paid flights.

For example, you might purchase a ticket in economy and use Avios to upgrade to premium economy or business class. On some routes, you may also be able to upgrade from premium economy to business class.

Upgrade availability depends on factors like the fare you originally booked and whether seats are open in the higher cabin.

Other Redemption Options

Like many airline loyalty programs, Iberia Club also allows members to redeem Avios for options such as hotel stays, car rentals and travel experiences.

However, these redemptions usually provide less value than redeeming Avios for flights.

Iberia Avios Sweet Spots

Iberia Club has long been known for offering good value on certain routes.

Flights Between the U.S. and Spain

One of the most well-known Iberia Avios redemptions is flying business class between the United States and Madrid.

Off-peak business-class flights between cities such as New York, Boston, or Chicago and Madrid can require around 40,500 to 50,500 Avios each way, depending on distance.

Pricing has increased in recent years, but these awards can still provide strong value compared with many other airline loyalty programs.

While Iberia is often known for business-class redemptions to Spain, economy flights can also be surprisingly affordable. Off-peak flights between New York (JFK) and Madrid (MAD) typically price around 16,000 Avios each way in economy.

However, Iberia occasionally runs promotions that discount award flights, so sometimes prices go even lower—like the example below where the flight drops to 14,400 Avios each way, plus taxes and fees.

Short-Haul Flights Within Europe

Iberia Club can also offer solid value on short-haul flights within Europe.

Because of the program’s distance-based pricing, shorter routes sometimes require relatively few Avios, making them useful for regional travel.

For example, a flight from Madrid (MAD) to Toulouse, France (TLS) costs just 4,750 Avios in economy.

Partner Airline Flights

Iberia Avios can also be used to book flights on Oneworld partner airlines.

Depending on the route, redeeming Avios through Iberia Club may sometimes cost fewer points than booking the same flight through another program.

Elite Status in Iberia Club

In addition to earning and redeeming Avios, Iberia Club also offers elite status for frequent travelers.

Elite status is earned by flying with Iberia and its partner airlines and can provide benefits such as priority check-in, lounge access on certain tickets, and additional baggage allowances.

While many travelers focus primarily on redeeming Avios, frequent flyers who regularly travel with Iberia or other Oneworld airlines may find additional value in earning elite status through the program.

Things To Watch Out For

While Iberia Avios can provide excellent value, there are a few potential drawbacks to keep in mind.

  • Taxes and fees can differ depending on the airline and route. Some flights may include higher surcharges than others.
  • Iberia Avios can expire after 36 months of account inactivity, so it’s important to keep some activity in your account to prevent losing your points.
  • Iberia’s website can sometimes be a bit slow or glitchy when searching for award flights, so you may need a little patience when booking.
  • Iberia doesn’t always display every partner airline award flight, so it may be easier to find availability using other airline search tools, like the British Airways website.

Bottom Line

Iberia Club is one of several airline loyalty programs that use Avios, but its award pricing can sometimes provide better value than other partners.

With the ability to earn Avios through flights, credit cards and transferable rewards programs—and the flexibility to move Avios between airline programs—travelers have several ways to take advantage of Iberia’s loyalty program.

For travelers looking to book flights to Spain or maximize their Avios redemptions, Iberia Club can be a valuable tool to have in their points-and-miles strategies.
