United Airlines is making some big changes to how travelers earn elite status in 2027. But bigger isn’t always better. While the airline is simplifying the qualification process, earning those coveted Premier perks could actually get harder.
Beginning January 1, 2027, United is eliminating Premier Qualifying Flights (PQFs) as a way to earn elite status. Instead, your status will depend entirely on how many Premier Qualifying Points (PQPs) you earn.
In other words, United cares a lot less about how often you fly and a lot more about how much you spend.
Currently, MileagePlus members can qualify for Premier status by earning enough PQPs or combining PQPs with a certain number of flights.
Starting in 2027, the flight-based option disappears. Here’s what you’ll need to earn each tier:
| Premier Tier | 2027 PQP Requirement |
|---|---|
| Silver | 6,000 |
| Gold | 12,000 |
| Platinum | 18,000 |
| 1K | 32,000 |
Silver, Gold and Platinum requirements stay the same for members who already qualify through PQPs alone. But Premier 1K is getting a substantial bump, increasing from 28,000 to 32,000 PQPs.
That’s a roughly 14% increase. And for travelers who previously qualified with 60 flights and 22,000 PQPs, it’s an even more painful 45% jump.
One thing isn’t changing, though: You’ll still need to fly at least four United or United Express segments each year to qualify for status.
Fortunately, United is throwing eligible cobranded credit cardholders a bone. Members who have an eligible United credit card open by December 31, 2026, can receive a head start on earning status in 2027. The bonus is based on their Premier status as of February 1, 2027.
United is also increasing the annual PQP earning cap on the United Club Card and United Club Business Card to 32,000 PQPs, meaning big spenders could theoretically earn enough for Premier 1K through credit card spending alone (plus those four required flights).
And by big spenders, we mean $480,000 in annual card spending! Pocket change, right?!

United is also introducing dynamic PlusPoints upgrade pricing for travel beginning February 1, 2027.
Rather than requiring a fixed number of PlusPoints, upgrade costs will fluctuate based on demand and seat availability.
United’s new system is certainly simpler, but whether that means it’s better depends on how you’ve been earning status.
If you typically qualify based on spending alone, the changes might not affect you much. But if you’ve relied on frequent, inexpensive flights to reach elite status, 2027 could be a much tougher year.
And for those chasing Premier 1K? Better start crunching those PQP numbers.
