Unlike many airline loyalty programs, SkyMiles never expire. So if you fly every week or only once every few years, your balance remains intact.

Delta is also a member of the SkyTeam alliance, which allows SkyMiles members to earn and redeem miles on airlines like Air France, KLM, Korean Air, and Aeromexico. Delta also maintains partnerships with several non-SkyTeam carriers, so your redemption opportunities can go even further.

 

How To Earn Delta SkyMiles

There are several ways to build a SkyMiles balance beyond just flying. In fact, many members earn far more miles from credit cards and transferable points than they do from ever setting foot on a plane.

Delta Credit Cards

For many, Delta credit cards are the foundation of their SkyMiles strategy.

American Express issues Delta’s lineup of co-branded cards, which offer opportunities to earn miles on everyday purchases and provide airline-specific perks.

Marriott Bonvoy points also transfer to SkyMiles at a 3:1 ratio, although Membership Rewards® transfers typically provide a better value.

One thing to remember: American Express charges a small excise tax offset fee when transferring Membership Rewards® to Delta—you’ll pay $0.0006 per point, with a maximum fee of $99 per transfer. 

Flying With Delta and Partners

For Delta-marketed flights, earnings are based on the price of the ticket rather than the distance flown. General members earn 5 miles per dollar spent on base airfare and carrier-imposed fees, while elite members earn bonus miles:

Stack TakeOff 15 With Award Sales

Eligible Delta SkyMiles American Express cardholders receive a 15% discount on Delta-operated award tickets through the TakeOff 15 benefit. This discount can be particularly powerful when combined with an existing award sale.

A route that is already discounted through a promotion can be even cheaper after the TakeOff 15 reduction is applied.
