Avios Launches New Calendar Tool for Easier Award Searches

I’ll be the first to admit that I like to search for award flights the old-fashioned way (versus using some of the amazing award search tools out there). Maybe I’m just a glutton for punishment. But seeing the new Avios calendar feature has my Luddite heart rejoicing.
Avios.com has rolled out a new award calendar that lets you search an entire month of award availability on British Airways, Iberia, and Aer Lingus at one time.
If you’ve ever spent way too much time clicking through dates looking for award availability, you can probably see the appeal, too.
Search a Month of Avios Award Availability at Once
The new tool is available on Avios.com and is pretty straightforward. Enter your origin and destination, the number of travelers and the month you want to travel, and the calendar will display dates with available award seats.

Even better, you can filter the results by cabin. So if you couldn’t care less about economy availability and just want to know when you can snag two business-class seats to Madrid, you can narrow the results accordingly.
The calendar also shows how many award seats are available and the Avios required for each flight, making it much easier to compare your options without searching date by date.
The New Avios Calendar Has a Few Limitations
As useful as the new calendar is, naturally there are a few limitations. For now, the calendar only works for nonstop flights. So if your trip requires a connection, you’ll still need to do some segment-specific searching.
You also can’t actually book your award through Avios.com. Once you find the flight you want, you’ll need to head to British Airways, Iberia, or Aer Lingus to complete the booking. That’s also where you’ll see the full taxes and fees, which aren’t displayed in the calendar search results either.
And while several airlines use Avios, the calendar currently only displays availability for British Airways, Iberia, and Aer Lingus. So, don’t expect to use it to hunt down Qatar Airways or Finnair awards just yet.

Bottom Line
Avios.com’s new award calendar isn’t perfect, but it’s a huge improvement for travelers with flexible dates. Instead of searching over and over to find dates with award availability, you can now see an entire month at a glance and filter it down to the cabin you actually want.
It might even be enough to convince this old-fashioned award searcher to embrace a little modern technology.
